TVAR has hired an Executive Director!

After more than 20 years of being all-volunteer, TVAR has finally decided to hire an Executive Director (ED). We had maxed out our capacity to save animals and were burning out our valuable volunteers. By hiring an ED to have a full-time focus on our programs and fundraising, TVAR hopes to be able to grow our presence and ability to save even more homeless animals.

Introducing Jill Cooney, CAWA, Executive Director for TVAR. If you have only to look at a cat or dog to have it grab your heart, Jill is your kindred spirit. In childhood, Jill met a black lab mix named Samantha who taught her the pure grace embodied by cats and dogs and their amazing capacity to connect to humans - and from then on she was that annoying child whose unending mission was to talk her parents into adopting a dog. Being realistic, she adopted her first cat upon striking out on her own after college.

Jill brings this life-long dedication and more than 20 years of nonprofit animal related experience to her role as Executive Director, having previously served in executive leadership capacities for Bay Area and International animal advocacy organizations including serving as Animal Programs Director for Tony La Russa's Animal Rescue Foundation, Operations Director for the Milo Foundation, Associate Director of In Defense of Animals and the Director of Behavior and Training as well as Adoption Director for The San Francisco SPCA. Ms. Cooney has shared her experience by speaking at national conferences and volunteering with local groups to elevate people's relationships with other animals and save lives. Reflecting her commitment to furthering the best practices of the field, Jill earned the prestigious Certified Animal Welfare Administrator credential in 2013. As a Leadership Contra Costa graduate, she expanded her core skills within the larger business community.

Jill has lived with animals ever since that first dog and now quite happily shares her house with both cats and dogs of various ages and sizes, and frequently, foster animals. She is devoted to using her experience to give companion animals the best chance to be valued and enjoy their lives.
